Welcome

Welcome to the Department of Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering!

There are many new and exciting things happening here in the department! The department has a new name – Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering (IMSE). This new department name better reflects the breadth of research and teaching activity occurring here. We have research and projects focused on traditional industrial engineering ideas of improving process flow and performance - although in addition to industrial and manufacturing settings we are applying these concepts and techniques in many service settings including healthcare. We are also conducting innovative research in modern manufacturing including additive manufacturing, remanufacturing and recycling, high performance materials machining, synthesizing and processing of biomaterials and composites, and integrating nano- and micro- fabrication techniques. Additionally, we are very active in the systems and engineering management domain where we apply concepts like systems theory, engineering and dynamics, to renewable and alternative energy systems, High Reliability Organization research and environmental sustainability and water systems.

We have a new building with over 27,000 square feet of teaching and research space. There are laboratories dedicated to supporting all of the departmental research thrust areas: manufacturing, operations research, systems engineering, human factors engineering, and statistical modeling. There are also five new classrooms with the latest in teaching technology and fully equipped to support distance education courses providing additional opportunities for students to learn from our excellent faculty.

We have a bright and exciting future ahead of us. Our research productivity has been boosted by our hiring four new faculty in the last three years. These new faculty are conducting innovative research that is funded by the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Energy among others (please see their web pages for further details). We will also be hiring several more faculty over the next few years as we continue to move forward.

We continue to receive excellent support from our alumni and the University. If you have not been to Lubbock recently, please plan to come – whether for a fall football game or simply to visit campus and the department.

If you would like to know more about the department or are planning to come to campus please reach out to me, I would enjoy talking with you!
