International Student Welcome Event

International Student Life hosted the second annual International Student Welcome Event on August 26th. The event was held on the South side of the International Cultural Center. The purpose of the event is to welcome both current and incoming international students to a new year at Texas Tech. It is an informal event created to promote conversation and form new relationships. Beef and vegetarian burgers and hot dogs are cooked outside the International Cultural Center where the scent of a good old Texas BBQ can waft across the campus. The event provided an opportunity for students to share a meal and sit on the grass in groups to promote conversation.

The beginning of a semester can bring on a lot of emotions for any student. Our international students have even more to deal with when beginning a new year. Culture shock is a disoriented experience when someone finds themselves in a new culture or way of life. It has been said that the best way to combat this inevitable shock is to have a network of support around you. International Student Life is an office created by the Office of International Affairs to provide support for our international students. This support is found across the Texas Tech system, and all around the Lubbock community.

Over twelve on and off campus resources showed up in support of our international students. This number is up from the first year. The resources range from Tech departments and organizations to ministries and businesses around Lubbock. Our international students have a large net of support, and this event is one way that we can show that to them.

There were close to 500 students in attendance throughout the evening. Students left with excitement for the start of a new academic year, and the knowledge that Texas Tech is a great place to be an international student.
