K-12 GEO was one of many sponsors hosting the South Plains Regional History Day competition
K-12 Global Education Outreach was one of many sponsors who hosted the South Plains Regional History Day competition on Saturday- March 7th at the Region 17 Service Center. The competition is part of National History Day, which offers year-long academic programs to over half-a-million middle-and high-school students around the world on historical topics of interest. Students choose one of nine categories in which to compete: individual website, group website, individual documentaries, group documentaries, individual exhibits, group exhibits, individual performance, group performance, paper. These research-based projects are entered into contests at the local campus levels, where top students have the opportunity to advance to regionals. Winners of the regional contests then advance to the state level which is held in Austin each year. In addition to increasing students' historical knowledge, the themed competition also encourages the development of 21st century skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, oral and written presentation skills, responsibility, self-esteem, and research and reading skills.
This year, seventy-four students from area schools competed at the regional level for the opportunity to advance to the state competition in Austin on May 2nd. A special thank you to the TTU Honors College, TTU History Department, Region 17 Service Center, Lubbock ISD, and the National Ranching Heritage Association for their assistance in making this year's regional competition a success.
