The Process of Paying



Texas Tech students can choose to participate in one of four different study abroad program types. Each program type has a different payment process.

Faculty-Led Programs including Programs at the TTU Center in Sevilla, Spain and TTU Costa Rica

Students participating in a faculty-led program, including those that take place at the TTU Center in Sevilla, Spain, and TTU Costa Rica, are responsible for paying Texas Tech tuition and fees, the Study Abroad program fee, the Education Abroad Fee, and Study Abroad insurance, if not included in the program fee. Students who are committed to participating in a faculty-led program will be billed on the following timeline*:

  • In the term before going abroad: a non-refundable deposit, and the Education Abroad fee.
  • In the term they are abroad: tuition and fees for the course(s) they are taking abroad, the remaining program fee, and the fee for Study Abroad insurance.

The program fees, Education Abroad Fee and insurance fee will be billed by the Study Abroad Office to the student's Student Business Services account. Tuition and fees are applied to the student's account when the student has enrolled in the course(s), and billing for that term is open. Payment is made to the account as if the student is on campus.

TTU Costa Rica

Students participating in a TTU Costa Rica program (not faculty-led) are responsible for paying Texas Tech tuition and fees, the Study Abroad program fee, the Education Abroad Fee, and Study Abroad insurance, if not included in the program fee. Students who are committed to participating in a TTU Costa Rica program will be billed on the following timeline*:

  • In the term before going abroad: the Education Abroad fee, and a non-refundable deposit (if applicable).
  • In the term they are abroad: tuition and fees for the course(s) they are taking abroad, the program fee, and the fee for Study Abroad insurance.

The program fees, Education Abroad Fee and insurance fee will be billed by the Study Abroad Office to the student's Student Business Services account. Tuition and fees are applied to the student's account when the student has enrolled in the course(s), and billing for that term is open. Payment is made to the account as if the student is on campus.

Reciprocal Exchange Programs

Students are responsible for paying Texas Tech tuition and fees through their Student Business Services account. Out-of-pocket expenses may include meals and/or accommodations. Depending on the student's reciprocal exchange program, these expenses may be paid directly to the host institution or to a third party (e.g., a landlord or apartment) in the host country.

Students who are committed to participating in a reciprocal exchange program will be billed on the following timeline*:

  • In the term before going abroad: the Education Abroad Fee.
  • In the term they are abroad: tuition and fees for the course(s) they are taking abroad, and the fee for Study Abroad insurance.

The Education Abroad Fee and insurance fee will be billed by the Study Abroad Office to the student's Student Business Services account. Tuition and fees are applied to the student's account when the student has enrolled and billing for that term is open. Payment is made to the account as if the student is on campus.

Affiliate Programs

Students are responsible for paying the affiliate provider directly for all costs associated with the affiliate's study abroad program. Fees may include tuition, excursions, visa assistance, accommodations, meals, and additional in-country support services. Accepted methods of payment (e.g., credit card, check, money transfer, etc.) will depend on the student's affiliate program. Questions about payment should be directed to the affiliate program provider.

Students who are committed to participating in an affiliate program will be billed on the following timeline*:

  • In the term before going abroad: the Education Abroad fee.
  • In the term they are abroad: the fee for Study Abroad insurance.

The Education Abroad Fee and insurance fee will be billed by the Study Abroad Office to the student's Student Business Services account. Payment is made to the account as if the student is on campus. Payment for the program costs are billed by and paid to the program provider.

*Billing timelines are subject to change at the discretion of the Texas Tech Study Abroad Office.

A Note About Student Business Services

Although Study Abroad can place study abroad-related charges on a student's Student Business Services account, Study Abroad has no say in payment options, payment plans, etc. These are dictated by Student Business Services and students are encouraged to contact Student Business Services directly with questions or concerns.
