CL Assessment

The Communication Literacy (CL) initiative is a key component of our institution's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). More information about the QEP is available here.

With the Fall 2018 term, we have completed the phase-out of our Writing Intensive requirement. All undergraduate degree programs have now implemented a CL plan and identified CL courses within that plan. The next phase of the CL initiative is to develop and implement CL plan assessment at the degree program level. This document describes that process and additional information about the CL initiative, including assessment, is available here.

TTU's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) includes a provision for assessment of CL plans at the degree program level. Data gathered from CL plan assessment will be submitted to SACSCOC as part of our institution's QEP report. The Center for Global Communication (CGC) and the Communication Advisory Committee (CAC) request that degree program coordinators consult with faculty in their areas to determine which option for assessment and reporting will best suit their needs. Options are described here:

Option 1

Input assessment data for 2019-2020 and future CL plans into Nuventive Improve (previously TracDat). The target deadline for submitting this information is October 2020.

To input CL plan assessment data into Nuventive Improve, degree program coordinators will need the following:

  1. At least one program-level outcome that relates to communication – please use (CL) to indicate;
  2. Course-level data provided by the Instructors of Record for the program's CL courses.

Degree program coordinators should review all submitted course-level data to form an assessment of the program's CL plan. At the time of reporting learning assessment results under the Results section of Improve, degree program coordinators will access the CL Rubric located in the Document Repository under Related Documents. You can view the document here: http://www.depts.ttu.edu/provost/curriculum/communication-literacy/cl-assessment.php. Once in Improve, the document will provide you with the following link which you will use to submit your programmatic assessment of your CL plan: https://ttuir.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3JyMOIw7jpWoXfD.

More information is available on the CL assessment webpage. Degree program coordinators are encouraged to review the information and direct any questions concerning assessment of the CL plan to the Communication Advisory Committee at commliteracy@ttu.edu. Degree program coordinators with questions specific to using Nuventive Improve are encouraged to contact Libby Spradlin (libby.spradlin@ttu.edu) in the Office of Planning and Assessment.

Option 2

Handle assessment of the 2019-2020 CL plan outside of Nuventive Improve but using the standard CL rubric. The target deadline for submitting this information is October 2019.

To report assessment data outside of Nuventive Improve, program coordinators should follow these guidelines:

  1. Request course-level data provided by the Instructors of Record for the program's CL courses;
  2. Review all submitted course-level data and complete the Communication Literacy Rubric to provide a summative overview of student progress toward the objectives of the program's CL plan. The Rubric to complete is available here.
  3. Use the Comments section at the end of the survey to provide a brief narrative describing student progress and indicating what changes to the CL plan might be necessary.

The CL rubric is available here. Degree program coordinators are encouraged to review the information and direct any questions concerning assessment of the CL plan to the Communication Advisory Committee at commliteracy@ttu.edu.

Option 3

The Offices of the Provost and Planning & Assessment recognize that some degree programs may have developed and implemented program-level CL assessment plans prior to the publication of this memo. Degree programs with existing CL assessment plans are encouraged to continue to use those. Degree program coordinators for those programs that have existing CL assessment plans should contact the Communication Advisory Committee at commliteracy@ttu.edu to inform the CAC about their assessment plans.
