Our History
Detachment 820's history at Texas Tech dates to the university's early military training programs. Texas Technological College was established in 1923, and an Army ROTC program operated at the institution before Air Force ROTC became a separate program in 1951 following the establishment of the United States Air Force.
Since then, Detachment 820 has prepared generations of Texas Tech students for commissioned service. The detachment has received both the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award.
Detachment alumni have served throughout the Air Force in command, aviation, technical and other leadership roles. Notable alumni include Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., a 1984 distinguished graduate of Texas Tech's ROTC program, and Col. Rick Husband, a 1980 Detachment 820 graduate and NASA astronaut who commanded Space Shuttle Columbia.
