Who Can Join Air Force ROTC?

Air Force ROTC is open to eligible Texas Tech students and students attending participating institutions who are interested in pursuing a commission in the Air Force or Space Force.

Students typically need enough time remaining in their academic program to complete the required Aerospace Studies coursework, Leadership Laboratory and other AFROTC requirements before graduation.

Eligibility and program requirements can vary based on academic standing, prior military experience and where a student is in their degree program. Prospective cadets should contact Detachment 820 before enrolling to discuss their individual situation.


How to Join Detachment 820

Prospective cadets should complete the following steps before beginning Air Force ROTC at Texas Tech.

  1. Contact Detachment 820

    Contact the detachment before registering so staff can review your academic timeline, answer questions and confirm that AFROTC is an appropriate commissioning pathway for you.

  2. Register for AFROTC Courses

    New cadets enroll in the Aerospace Studies course appropriate for their program year and the required Leadership Laboratory. Detachment 820 can help you determine which courses to add to your schedule.

  3. Create Your WINGS Account

    Prospective cadets complete required information through the Air Force ROTC WINGS system. Follow the current instructions provided by Detachment 820 when creating and completing your account.

  4. Complete Required Documentation

    New cadets will provide identification, academic records and other onboarding documentation required by AFROTC. Detachment 820 will provide instructions regarding the documents required for your enrollment.

  5. Attend New Cadet Orientation

    New Cadet Orientation introduces incoming cadets to Detachment 820, program expectations and required administrative processes before the semester begins.

What to Expect as a Cadet

Air Force ROTC combines a student's regular Texas Tech coursework with military education, physical training and leadership development. Cadets participate in Aerospace Studies courses, Leadership Laboratory and physical training while progressing toward their degree.

Participation requirements change as cadets advance through the program and prepare for commissioning.

Scholarships & Financial Assistance

Air Force ROTC offers several scholarship opportunities for eligible students. Scholarship availability, eligibility requirements and application processes vary depending on a student's academic and ROTC status.

Students do not necessarily need an Air Force ROTC scholarship to participate in the program.
