Overview

The Spanish Heritage Language (SHL) Program at Texas Tech University is designed for students who already have experience with Spanish, whether they learned it at home, studied abroad, or lived in a Spanish-speaking country. Rather than starting from the basics, the program builds on students’ existing language skills and cultural knowledge, helping them strengthen their confidence, proficiency, reading, and writing abilities while developing professional and bilingual communication skills. 

What makes the SHL Program unique is its focus on valuing the diverse ways Spanish is spoken and used in real communities. Through innovative coursework and bilingual practices, students learn to communicate effectively in authentic settings while exploring the cultural and linguistic richness of the Spanish-speaking world. The program encourages students to use Spanish confidently in academic, professional, and community contexts, preparing them for success in an increasingly multilingual society. 

Who Can Take these Courses?

Students who have previous experience with the Spanish language (i.e., whether they learned it in a natural environment, studied abroad, or grew up/lived in a Spanish-speaking country).

What are the goals of this program?

The program is designed to be accessible and supportive. No textbook is required, students are not expected to speak “perfect” Spanish, and courses are structured around a pedagogy that builds on what students already know. With flexible course offerings, online options, a free placement test, and opportunities for transcript-recognized community engagement, the SHL Program provides a welcoming environment for heritage speakers who want to strengthen their Spanish, connect with their cultural heritage, and gain skills that stand out in both graduate school and the workforce.
