The Texas Tech University Department of History is mourning the loss of our colleague, Dr. Gary Forsythe, who recently passed away. Dr. Forsythe was a member of our department for over twenty years, wherein he shared his passion for ancient history with thousands of students. He had an extraordinary career, publishing nine books and many articles, and winning numerous awards and fellowships, including an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship and a two-year fellowship at the School of Historical Study at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Dr. Sabrina Thomas recently spoke at the Truman Institute Civil Rights Symposium in
Washington D.C., during the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the signing of
Executive Order 9981. Signed by President Harry S. Truman in 1948, this executive
order integrated the U.S. Military with the intention of ensuring "there shall be
equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without
regard to race, color, religion or national origin."
