Targeted External Awards for Faculty
The Targeted External Faculty Awards Program at Texas Tech University is part of an initiative to increase recognition and support of our faculty and increase the national and international visibility of Texas Tech University. We support successful applications for targeted fellowships and awards recognized by the Center for Measuring University Performance (CMUP), the American Association of Universities (AAU), and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).
Texas Tech maintains a list of Targeted External Awards categorized as Highly Prestigious Awards and Prestigious Awards.
Prior to submitting any application for a targeted external award, a faculty member must receive approval to apply for the award from the department chair, school director, or area coordinator.

Highly Prestigious Award Incentives
- An expedited faculty development leave (FDL) procedure will be used when faculty receive one of the Highly Prestigious Awards. These requests will be processed separately from standard FDL applications, and off-cycle when needed.
- Up to $25,000 for demonstrated relocation expenses. This reimbursement will be jointly provided by the Office of the Provost and the Office of Research & Innovation. An advance budget estimate must be submitted and approved prior to departing to establish the account through the faculty member's home department. Relocation funds are primarily intended for those fellowships that require recipients to relocate for all or part of the duration of the fellowship.
- A one-time $5,000 honorarium, to be centrally funded, granted at the start of the fiscal year following conclusion of the fellowship or award year. Recipients should submit a one-page report at the conclusion of the award or fellowship to the Office of the Provost and the Office of Research & Innovation to initiate acquisition of this honorarium.
Prestigious Award Incentive
- Prestigious External Awards advance the reputation of our faculty and bring recognition to the institution. Faculty members who receive prestigious external awards may be eligible for a $1,000 honorarium. Listings of prestigious external awards are available below.
Any faculty member receiving a targeted external award should notify the Office of the Provost and the Office of Research & Innovation immediately.

Prior to submitting any application for a targeted external award, a faculty member must receive approval to apply for the award from the department chair, school director, or area coordinator.
