About

The Texas Tech Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance (FMLA) is a student organization aimed at promoting gender equality, raising social awareness on topics such as rape culture and intersectional feminism, and providing education on a wide variety of feminist issues.

In 1999, the first Tech FMLA organization was officially recognized as a student organization. Founding president was Erica Lucci and the founding advisor was Dr. Gwen Sorell.

Officer Positions

Demonstrating leadership is one of many questions you will be asked to explain when applying for a job, internship, scholarship, etc. Being an officer of a student organization is a great opportunity to get experience! If you would like to run, please prepare a quick speech on why you want to run and what your goals are for the organization as an officer. Email and attend our meetings.

Inspired by the original campaign #WhoNeedsFeminism, we decided to begin our own campaign to hear what students, faculty and staff had to say. No matter how many times we define feminism as the social, political, and economic equality of women, we always get the question asked back to us is why? It appears that there are many on our campus that assume feminism is no longer needed. So, that is why we changed the "who" to "why".

Take Back the Night

"Take Back the Night" is an interactive event that creates awareness, empowers survivors and educates the community about sexual violence. Our Voice is Our Strength; please join us to speak out against sexual violence by attending this important event and inviting your friends.

The Vagina Monologues

The Vagina Monologues is used as the centerpiece of V-Day: A Global Activist Movement to End Violence Against Women and Girls. It is based on real women's stories so it allows women who hear the stories to know that they are not alone in their own experience. It helps people who have experienced violence heal. It inspires people – women AND men - to get involved in V Day's efforts to stop violence. It removes the shame often associated with the word "vagina" and the vagina itself and instead celebrates the word, celebrates women.

One Billion Rising - Day of Action! February 14th

ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.

V-Day

V-Day is a global movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler's award winning play the Vagina Monologues and other artistic works.

Slutwalk Lubbock

Slutwalk is a worldwide movement, working to challenge mindsets and stereotypes of victim-blaming and slut-shaming.The first event in Lubbock was organized in 2011 as a hat tip to the flagship SlutWalk International, which launched in Toronto after a police officer from that city made international headlines when he said "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized. Members of Tech FMLA support and participate in this event each year. V-MEN

Hosted by Lubbock V-Men

V-Men started in 2009 with a workshop that focused on including men in the dialogue of violence against women. This V-Men workshop allowed men to tell their stories, just like women have done through The Vagina Monologues. Not only did this allow men to establish a context to come together on the issues of domestic and sexual violence, but it also allowed participants to answer the call to be a part of the solution. Hollaback Lubbock

Hollaback! is a movement dedicated to ending street harassment using mobile technology. Street harassment is one of the most pervasive forms of gender-based violence and one of the least legislated against.
