Engagement Surveys

Transition & Engagement administers family of surveys measuring how active or "engaged" students are in academic and non-academic aspects of their college experience. Ongoing assessment allows the university to examine levels of student engagement as new students enter the University and to track their engagement during their first and senior years.

Taken together, the data collected longitudinally from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) instruments provide a rich portrait of student expectations and experiences.

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is a widely used instrument which measures the degree of involvement or engagement of college undergraduates in a wide range of activities and experiences during their first year and senior college years. NSSE measures involvement in what are recognized as "good practices" in undergraduate education as there is evidence that the degree of engagement in such college activities and programs is one predictor of outcomes such as learning, personal development, and retention.

Texas Tech University administers the survey during the Spring semester of odd years.

"The NSSE will be a core component of our indirect assessment [of the university's Quality Enhancement Plan]. Throughout the QEP, we will examine the results of appropriate NSSE questions and compare student responses to those from earlier years to monitor overall gains in attitude and valuing of both communication and global awareness/competence."

Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE)

The Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) is one of a family of surveys measuring how active or "engaged" students are in academic and non-academic aspects of their college experience. Research has suggested that engagement is one of the important influences on how well students perform and persist. The BCSSE is given to incoming students just before their first college term to help assess their expectations about college as well as relevant experience in high school.

Texas Tech University administers the BCSSE in the Fall of even years.
