Texas Tech University

Academic Fresh Start

Under the provisions of the Texas Education Code, Section 51.931, and as modified by Texas Senate Bill 365, a Texas resident may elect to forfeit all academic coursework earned seven or more years prior to the requested enrollment date at Texas Tech University. An applicant who is admitted under this plan may not receive credit for courses completed seven or more years before the start date of the semester to which they have been admitted. Students approved for Academic Fresh Start must also meet current freshman or transfer admissions requirements.

If a student who enrolls under this program completes a prescribed course of study, earns a baccalaureate degree, and applies for admission to a postgraduate or professional program offered by a public institution of higher education, the admitting institution will consider only the grade point average of the applicant established by the coursework completed after the student enrolled under this plan (along with other criteria the institution normally uses to evaluate applicants for admission).

Note:

  • Fresh Start must be requested at the time of application to Texas Tech
  • An applicant requesting Fresh Start must be a Texas Resident for tuition purposes
  • Applicant must provide Texas Tech with official transcripts from every institution attended
  • Once the Fresh Start provision is claimed, it cannot be reversed
