Dr. Carmen Pereira
Department Chair and Professor of Spanish

Greetings! It has been my honor to become chair of CMLL at the beginning of the fall semester of 2018. Although I have been a member of the department since 2005, I have had the opportunity during these months to get to know better our top-notch staff and our impressive world-class faculty. I am proud to be part of such a great team. And the team is growing: this fall semester we have welcomed Dr. Raychel Vasseur, Assistant Professor of Spanish Linguistics and Director of the Foundations of Spanish program (first-two years) and Dr. Rossy Lima, Visiting Assistant Professor and Director of the Spanish Heritage program. We also have a new director of the Language Learning Laboratory and Research Center, Dr. Christopher Vasquez-Wright. Dr. Charles Grair, Associate Professor of German, has graciously accepted to be CMLL's Associate Chair; his long experience and his commitment to the department will be invaluable assets for this position. We will be busy in the spring semester carrying out searches for four positions, in Spanish Heritage Linguistics, US-Latinx Border Studies, Classical Archeology and a Qualia Endowed Professor in Applied Linguistics-Romance Languages.

Our Study Abroad programs are thriving. We have a record number of TTU students going to Seville this spring. In addition to our successful study abroad programs in Spain, Germany and France, this summer CMLL faculty will also lead programs in China and Jordan. The immersion in another language and culture that studying abroad provides has been identified as CMLL signature learning experience. To help as many students as possible to have this transformative opportunity we ask that you contribute to the Lorum Stratton Study Abroad Endowed Scholarship. You can help to transform students' lives and job prospects with any donation you are able to give.

CMLL will hold our 2nd Study Abroad Fair on February 6th in our building's ground floor. Do stop by if you want to learn more about the wonderful experiences that await our students around the world.

I take this opportunity to wish everybody happy holidays and a smashing new year.
