Welcome to CMLL

Greetings from Lubbock, Texas! As Chair and Associate Chair of the Department of Classical & Modern Languages & Literatures, we encourage you to apply to Texas Tech University and pursue a degree in our department. We are a vibrant community of learners and scholars from all over the world, right here in the heart of West Texas. Our department offers bachelor's degrees in Spanish and in Languages and Cultures with a concentration in American Sign Language/English Interpretation, Chinese Language & Area Studies, Classics, German, French, or Russian Language & Area Studies. You can also minor in ASL, Classics, Latin, Ancient Greek, Italian, French, German, Russian, Russian Language & Area Studies, Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, and Spanish.

With a major or minor from us, you can pursue a rewarding career in fields like business, consulting, engineering, government, law, marketing, medicine, military, publishing, teaching, or translation and interpretation. You can even be an entrepreneur! In short: A degree in languages and cultures gives you the skills you need to succeed in a broad range of careers. To increase your attractiveness on the job market and increase your earning potential, you can study two subjects and do a double major, for instance Chinese and Business, German and Engineering, or Spanish and Pre-Law. You can pick a combination that is tailored to your academic interests and career goals.

Our department also offers faculty-led study abroad programs. Our professors go abroad with you to ensure the highest quality instruction and excursions. With us, you will really get to know a country and its people, not as a tourist, but as a traveler, lifelong learner, and global citizen.

We hope you will consider studying languages and cultures with us at Texas Tech!

Sincerely,

Dr. Carmen Pereira (Chair) and Dr. Belinda Kleinhans (Associate Chair)
