March 28, 2018

Dr. Dave Hoisington from the University of Georgia held a special seminar at the International Cultural Center on March 28th regarding his leadership of the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Peanut. The University of Georgia was recently awarded a $14 million, five-year cooperative agreement with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to manage the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Peanut, a global peanut research program that works to alleviate hunger by helping farmers in developing countries to grow peanut, a bountiful, nutritious crop that has the potential to help fight global hunger and poverty. As the Director of the Peanut Lab, Dr. Hoisington leads innovative U.S. science to improve peanut production and use, raise nutrition awareness, and increase food nutritional quality in developing countries in the Americas and Africa.

Drawing on the expertise of top U.S. universities and developing countries' own research institutions, the Feed the Future innovation labs tackle some of the world's greatest challenges in agriculture and food security. The new Peanut Lab plans to build on many of the successes of the previous Peanut & Mycotoxin Innovation Lab by developing new varieties and focusing on pre and postharvest management, and will also work on new research projects in the areas of peanut-based nutrition, gender and youth. The Peanut Lab is a portfolio of collaborative projects involving researchers at universities and public and private institutions in the U.S. and partner institutions abroad. Dr. Hoisington's seminar discussed the Peanut Lab's current priorities, as well as goals, objectives, and plans for a call for proposals for potential collaborations. The presentation can be found through the link below.

Prior to joining the University of Georgia, Dr. Hoisington was the Deputy Director General for Research at the International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) based in Hyderabad, India. He also served in various positions at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in Mexico leading the Genetic Resources Program and the Applied Biotechnology Center for nearly 16 years. Dave has published over 100 refereed journal articles, 30 book chapters, and made numerous invited presentations at international conferences.
