CAP Program

We are CAP

What is CAP?

CAP or Cultural Ambassadors Program, gives international students at Texas Tech a chance to share their culture with K-12 students in the Lubbock area. When local schools host a culture fair, event or class they will contact our  K-12 Global Outreach Program. We (ISL) work in partnership with K-12 Global Outreach to run the CAP Program. Together we select students to attend these school functions where you, the student, have a chance to teach children about a country they may never have heard of or may never have the chance to visit!

Talking to students about your culture/country is more important than you may realize. It is important to introduce children to people who are different than themselves. By learning about the world outside of Lubbock, children develop empathy, geography skills, how to interact with other social groups and a curiosity about the world that they may not have had before.

Questions?

Will I Recieve Training?

Don't worry! Many students feel a little nervous about talking in front of a classroom, but we don't expect everyone to immediately know how to do this.

We offer training at the beginning of the program and are always available to answer questions, help with PowerPoint, and provide feedback! On the day of Cultural Fairs, we will be present to offer support (unless something urgent comes up).

Trainings are required to participate in the program and are 1.5 hours long. We offer two days to choose from. Only one day needs to be attended.

Is Transportation Provided to the schools?

Yes! We will send out an email before a School event asking if anyone needs help with transportation.

Will I be responsible for Designing my own PowerPoint/Activity

Yes!

You have creative freedom when it comes to designing your PowerPoint! We will let you know in advance the age of the students you will be speaking to so you know how to talk to your audience.

Powerpoints should be colorful and engaging. Students enjoy pictures, videos, and a speaker who interacts with them. You can also provide an activity such as a coloring page, teaching them a song, or words in your language, reading a folktale or story from your country, teaching them festival games, and so on. There are many things you can do to have fun with students and teach at the same time.

We are always happy to talk with you and brainstorm ideas! Just ask us!
