Pre-Professional Health Careers

What does the Pre-Professional Health Careers (PPHC) Office provide?

We provide individual advisement for students who are preparing for admission to professional health schools. Most professional health schools do not specify particular majors as part of their admission requirements. Texas Tech University does not offer degrees in Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dentistry, or any other pre-health area. Each Pre-Professional Health Careers student who plans to earn a baccalaureate degree must choose a major by junior year as well as complete the courses required for admission into the professional health school. Pre-Professional Health Careers students are advised to choose a major offered within any of the colleges at the university. The major should suit the student's interests and abilities, as well as offer alternative career options in the event career plans change. The Pre-Professional Health Careers Committee assists Texas Tech University students in coordinating their letters of evaluation for application to schools of dentistry, medicine, optometry and podiatry.

Professional health schools include dentistry, medicine, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, and allied health sciences. Most professional schools in the field of health care require the completion of specific college level sciences and general education courses prior to admission. The Pre- Professional Health Careers office provides an up-to-date collection of specific information regarding the various health careers, including prerequisites needed prior to admission to health professional programs.  For more information about these health areas, click on the "Pre-Health Areas" link.

Courses listed as prerequisites for professional schools must be college-level courses taken for letter grades. However, credit by examination, using the standardized tests described in the Texas Tech University course catalog are also acceptable for certain courses.
