30-Minute Miracle Series: Teaching Controversial Topics
This session will tackle how to prepare for controversial discussions in your class that can lead to great learning opportunities. Although controversial topic discussions can get out of hand, we will give clear steps on how to identify, address, and move controversial topics into learning opportunities. We will demonstrate how the strategies will help you not "shy away" from topics that students want to discuss and how to make sure that class material is at the forefront of these discussions.

Communication Strategies for Difficult Conversations (Theory and Skill Development).
Dr. Brian Van Brunt (2/2015)
Brian Van Brunt, Ed. D., Sr. Vice President with the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management (NCHERM) group will present a half-day training on Communication Strategies for Difficult Conversations. The program consists of two 90 minute sessions (both repeated morning and afternoon), the first focusing on theory and skill development, including motivational interviewing skills, change theory, and concepts such as congruence, genuineness, and positive regard. The second session will focus on practical application of the skills and knowledge learned in the first session in a variety of case scenarios. The presentations are tailored to the TTU advising community, Raider Ready instructors, and other professional staff who work daily with difficult situations or conversations. Associate Deans may also find the presentations useful and interesting. Brian Van Brunt has provided training and guidance for Texas Tech University related to the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT), threat assessment, violence prevention, and distressed students support. Brian is an accomplished speaker and facilitator, and many of those who have heard Brian in previous sessions at TTU have requested that he come back to deliver additional training.
