KSM's Grue Lands 2nd for Science Abstract

Katherine A. Grue, Graduate Student and Teaching Assistant in Exercise Physiology in the Department of Kinesiology & Sport Management, won second place in the Basic Science Award for her abstract titled, "Effects of High-fat diet and Exercise Intervention on C57BL/6 Mothers," at the Laura W. Bush 2015 Gender-Specific Medicine & Women's Health Symposium, held in October at TTUHSC.

KSM's Mota Publishes Fatigue Research

Jacob Mota, Graduate Student and Teaching Assistant of Human Performance in the Department of Kinesiology & Sport Management, is the lead author of a research article, "Influence of Hamstring Fatigue on the Estimated Percentage of Fast-Twitch Muscle Fibers for the Vastus Lateralis," published in the December edition of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. Co-authors include former students Elias Carrillo and Kendra Olinghouse.

10 Undergrad Researchers Win CISER Award

CISER, the Center for Integration of STEM Education & Research, held its Fifth Annual Scholar Research Forum Oct. 17. More than 50 undergraduate researchers, program monitors and non-presenting scholars attended. During the event, 10 undergraduate students received the new Christopher Rodriguez Research Presentation Award, named for the undergraduate scholar whose untimely death cut short a promising academic career. Award recipients are:

CMLL's Sierra Attends TTU on Fulbright

ASTRID SIERRA, a Master's Student from Honduras in the Department of Classical & Modern Languages & Literatures' applied linguistics program, is using her Fulbright Scholarship to earn her degree here at TTU. Sierra, an English teacher in Honduras, told TexasTechToday that she applied for the Fulbright Scholarship because she wanted to continue her studies beyond her career and culture. She plans to conduct research toward improving how English is taught in Honduras. She also would like to earn a doctoral degree in second languages studies. Sierra chose Texas Tech because of its faculty members and programs, and she found the core courses to be what she was looking for to advance her academic and professional life.

SASW's Mantilla Attends TTU on Fulbright

XIMENA MANTILLA, a Master's Student from Bolivia in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology & Social Work's Forensic Sciences Program, is using her Fulbright Scholarship to further her education here at TTU. Mantilla worked as a forensic examiner for the police in Bolivia, where the discipline of forensic sciences is just beginning to develop. Although she holds a Master's degree in forensic medicine from Mayor de San Andres University in Bolivia, Mantilla wanted to deepen her knowledge and was told that the best forensic science programs were in the United States. After graduation, Mantilla hopes to return to her home country and continue working for the Bolivian police, perhaps as a trainer of the homicide and crime scene investigators, she told TexasTechToday.
