Why Classics?

Whether you're discovering Classics for the first time or have a long-standing interest in the ancient world, you'll find a place here. As the original interdisciplinary field, Classics explores the languages, literature, history, culture, archaeology, and ideas of ancient Greece, Rome, and the wider Mediterranean world—and their lasting influence on society today.

Studying Classics develops critical thinking, research, communication, and problem-solving skills that are valued across a wide range of careers. Classics graduates excel in fields such as law, medicine, business, technology, education, public service, and the arts, and consistently perform well on graduate and professional school entrance exams.

Fieldwork Study Abroad Opportunities

Studying abroad is one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences you can have as a Classics student. Imagine traveling to the Mediterranean to study the languages and cultures of Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome and the Ancient Near East! We strongly encourage our students to consider studying abroad,  and there are many options for doing it.

You could go on an archaeological dig, do fieldwork, and/or take language and culture courses. There is nothing quite like learning about these things ‘on site’, where it all happened, for oneself!
