Fellow Responsibilities and Review

Responsibilities

The Jones Fellows in Teacher Education are engaged in full-time graduate studies and in the research, program, and service activities relevant to teacher education for each year during the Fellowship tenure. They activities include the following:

  • Successful completion of the courses and degree requirements in their program and a dissertation with a focus on particular issues of teacher education
  • Effective performance as a research assistant 20-hour per week devoted to the research, academic, and program activities in teacher education as coordinated by the Helen DeVitt Jones Chair in Teacher Education
  • Active participation in the service for university, local, and/or professional communities through the resourceful application of professional knowledge and skills developed in their program studies and in the activities associated to the Jones Fellowship in the field of Teacher Education

Although the Jones Fellows in Teacher Education are expected to complete their doctoral studies and dissertations with a focus on teacher education, they can fulfill these requirements by examining different issues relevant to teacher education using different theoretical lenses, knowledge, and skills and various kinds of research approaches acquitted in diverse fields of education and by pursuing various doctoral programs offered in the College of Education. Review Criteria

The Jones Fellows in Teacher Education are expected to submit their annual review report to the Jones Fellow Selection and Review Committee for annual review about what they are able to accomplish for a particular year when they receive the Jones Fellowship. The annual review report should include materials as required and will be submitted to the committee by the end of each academic year. The committee will assess each Jones Fellow's annual report and make a decision on the Jones Fellowship Renewal for the Jones Fellow in a holistic manner using the established qualification criteria. These criteria include:

  • Successful progress toward the completion of each program course with a final grade of 3.5 and above, other degree requirements including high quality outcome of qualified examinations, or a distinguished dissertation focusing on particular issue(s) of teacher education by working with a committee whose chair or co-chair with expertise in teacher education during the year
  • Effective performance as a research assistant for the research, academic, and program activities in teacher education as coordinated by the Helen DeVitt Jones Chair in Teacher Education shown through satisfied completion of relevant tasks assigned, research presentations and publications, and sustained collaborative and/or independent efforts to the inquiry into teacher education during the year
  • Resourceful application of professional knowledge and skills developed in their program studies and in the activities associated to the Jones Fellowship in the field of Teacher Education to serve for university, local, and/or professional communities. These service activities can be shown through Jones Fellows' active participation in the committees work, quality consultation for local schools and communities, professional organizations, and institutions, and active initiation of and involvement in various service work relevant to teacher education on and beyond the Texas Tech campus
