Llano Estacado Student Chapter Of The Society Of Environmental Toxicology And Chemistry (LE-SETAC)
LE-SETAC is an independent, non-profit, student organization located at Texas Tech University. It is a student chapter of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC).
LE-SETAC promotes graduate research, education, and development in the areas of environmental toxicology, environmental chemistry, remediation, and risk hazard assessment. LE-SETAC promotes a forum for communication between students and professionals in government, industry, and academia.
We welcome both graduates and undergraduates pursuing careers in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, microbiology, biochemistry, geology, environmental engineering, and environmental toxicology or otherwise a basic interest in environmental issues. The member fee is $15 per year.
LE-SETAC has a faculty advisor who is an active member of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. The faculty advisor for 2018-2019 academic year is Dr. Jacyln Cañas, Assistant Professor at The Institute of Environmental and Human Health.
Primary activities of the Student Chapter include education outreach and funding-raising events to help members travel to scientific meetings. Members volunteer multiple times a semester to teach inquiry-based science experiments at local elementary schools. Previous experiments have included animal communication, predator-prey relations, and oil spill remediation. Members also are volunteer judges for both local and regional science fairs.
LE-SETAC is also a proud participant in the Adopt-a-Highway program.
