Respondus Lockdown browser and Monitor student faqs

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within a learning system. Students cannot print, copy, access other applications, or search the Internet during an online exam.

Respondus Monitor is a fully automated proctoring solution that uses webcam technology to record students during online exams, acting as a deterrent to cheating and providing instructors with post-test analysis. It is a companion application for the Respondus LockDown Browser.

WHAT INFORMATION DOES RESPONDUS COLLECT FROM STUDENTS?

Privacy is central to the Respondus Monitor architecture. It minimizes the personal data being collected, uses an automated system to analyze it, and then restricts access to the results.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY ONLINE EXAM WILL REQUIRE PROCTORING?

If you have an online exam that requires proctoring via Respondus Monitor, a notification will be provided within your syllabus. Additionally, prior to the exam you will be provided with instructions and a confirmation that the online exam will be proctored.

IF MY ONLINE EXAM REQUIRES PROCTORING, WHAT WILL I NEED?

Students will need a webcam with microphone (internal or USB), their student ID, the Respondus LockDown Browser downloaded and a quiet private location with a reliable internet connection. It is the student's responsibility to ensure these requirements are met.

WHAT IF I HAVE A TECHNICAL PROBLEM?
WHAT ABOUT ACCESSIBILITY AND THOSE STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS?

Respondus is VPAT certified, 508 compliant, and fully accessible to those with special needs. Students with special needs are required to contact the Office of Student Disability Services to verify that the course does include online proctoring.

WHO ULTIMATELY DETERMINES IF CHEATING HAS OCCURRED?

Just like a traditional class exam, this is determined by the instructor.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor requires the Respondus LockDown Browser to be downloaded by the student. The students access the LockDown Browser to take their exam; they are locked out of accessing anything on their computer. Resondus Monitor records the students screen and if the instructor chooses it will also record the student taking the exam.
