The Syllabus Tool in RaiderCanvas
Using the Syllabus tool in RaiderCanvas is simple! You will notice that the Syllabus tool has templated information that is particularly helpful if you have not written a syllabus in the past but it is easily deleted if you do not need it.
How to add your syllabus to RaiderCanvas
- In the course navigation (in red on the left side of the screen), click the Syllabus link.
- Click on the Edit button. You will see a syllabus template. If you do not want to use the template, select the text and delete. HOWEVER, do not delete the TTU Required Syllabus Statements, the Recommended TTU AI Statements, or the TTU Additional Course Syllabus Statements.
- We strongly recommend that you copy and paste your syllabus into the syllabus description window. Although you can use the Insert menu to add your syllabus as a link, we do not recommend it as it may cause accessibility issues.
- Do not edit or delete the required syllabus statements. TTU Online and the TLPDC will work in collaboration to update information on the required statements.
- Review the recommended TTU AI statements and selecting the statement that most closely matches your teaching philosophy and learning goals. Delete the other statements. You can also choose to add a statement of your own.
- Edit the Additional Course Syllabus Statements by deleting any statements that are not relevant to your course (pay particular attention to the statements regarding wildlife or livestock in the class as they may not be relevant to your context).
- Click Update Syllabus. Notice that under the Syllabus, Canvas automatically generates a Course Summary based on course assignments and calendar events. All published assignments and non-graded items with a to-do date are listed. The Course Summary is enabled by default, but you can edit the syllabus and hide the Course Summary by unchecking the Show Course Summary checkbox. To view the syllabus as a student, click the View as Student button (upper right-hand corner).
Course Summary
- Whether you upload a pdf version of your syllabus or use the syllabus template, a Course Summary is automatically generated for the course based on due dates from your course assignments. All assignments (unpublished and published) are listed for instructors, but students only see published assignments.
- Items within the Course Summary can only be changed by editing or deleting the assignments.
- Changes to dated items can be made in both the Assignments and Calendar features and will be automatically updated in the Syllabus.
- Click the title to view the details of the assignment or event. Any assignments or events that are past the due date are highlighted in gray. Undated items are listed in alphabetical order.
The Course Summary is enabled by default, but you can edit the syllabus and hide the Course Summary.
The Sidebar Section
- The sidebar section displays information about course events and grading. The assignment group information can be edited in the Assignments feature while the Calendar information can be edited in both the Assignments and Calendar features. Any changes made will be reflected in the Course Summary section of the Syllabus.
- The sidebar includes a mini calendar. Any date that includes an event or assignment due date are shown with a gray background. To view an associated assignment or event in Course Summary, click the calendar date.
- If your course includes weighted assignment groups, the sidebar also shows the percentages
of each group.
