About Student Disability Services
Student Disability Services works with Texas Tech University students to provide reasonable accommodations and support equal access to university programs and activities. SDS serves students with a wide range of disabilities and conditions and works with each student individually to determine appropriate accommodations.
Our staff also works with faculty, staff and campus partners to support the effective implementation of accommodations and improve accessibility across the university.
Mission
Student Disability Services promotes each student's learning experience by providing programs and services for students with disabilities and education of the campus community on issues related to students' disabilities.
SDS supports students in pursuing their academic goals while helping ensure equal access to Texas Tech programs, services and activities.
What We Do
SDS coordinates disability-related accommodations and provides support to students throughout their time at Texas Tech.
Services include:
- Reviewing requests for disability-related accommodations.
- Coordinating classroom and testing accommodations.
- Providing Letters of Accommodation to eligible students.
- Coordinating sign language interpreting and realtime transcription services.
- Supporting access to course materials and assistive technology.
- Providing information about accessible campus resources and services.
- Helping students and instructors address questions about accommodation implementation.
- Connecting students with academic support and other university resources.
- Providing education and consultation to faculty, staff and the campus community about disability access and accommodations.
Students who are new to SDS can begin by completing the accommodation request process.
About Accommodations
Accommodations are determined individually. Students with the same disability may experience different barriers and may not receive the same accommodations.
SDS considers the student's disability-related functional limitations, supporting documentation and information provided by the student when determining reasonable accommodations.
Depending on the student's individual needs, accommodations may include:
- Extended time or a reduced-distraction environment for exams.
- Supplemental note-taking assistance.
- Accessible course materials or approved assistive technology.
- Sign language interpreting or realtime transcription.
- Disability-related classroom accommodations.
- Housing or dining accommodations.
- Other reasonable accommodations based on individual need.
Reasonable accommodations provide equal access without changing the essential academic requirements of a course or program.
Accommodations Are Confidential
Disability documentation is maintained by SDS. Students are not required to disclose their diagnosis or provide medical documentation directly to instructors.
For academic accommodations, SDS communicates approved accommodations through a Letter of Accommodation. The LOA identifies the accommodations a student is approved to use without disclosing the student's diagnosis.
Meet the SDS Team
The Student Disability Services team includes case managers, accessibility and testing professionals, sign language interpreters and administrative staff who work together to support students and coordinate accommodations.
Students registered with SDS may work directly with an assigned case manager who can answer questions about accommodations, help address access concerns and connect students with additional resources.
For general accommodation questions, students may contact the SDS office. Specialized questions may also be directed to the testing or interpreter services teams.
