Housing & Dining Accommodations

Students with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations related to university housing or dining. Student Disability Services reviews disability-related documentation and works with University Student Housing and Hospitality Services to coordinate approved accommodations.

Students are encouraged to begin the accommodation process as early as possible. Housing assignments and dining arrangements depend on availability, and some accommodations may require additional coordination.

Housing Accommodations

Students who need a disability-related modification to their university housing may request a housing accommodation through Student Disability Services.

Housing accommodations are determined individually based on the student's disability-related needs and supporting documentation. Depending on the student's needs, an accommodation may involve features or arrangements related to the student's room, residence hall or access to university housing.

A disability-related housing accommodation is different from a housing preference. SDS evaluates whether a specific housing arrangement is necessary to provide equal access because of a disability.

Housing Assignments

Approval of a housing accommodation does not guarantee a specific residence hall, room or roommate. University Student Housing determines assignments based on the approved accommodation and available housing that meets the student's disability-related needs.

Students must also complete the standard University Student Housing application, contract and other required housing processes.

Housing Accommodation Process

1. Complete the SDS accommodation process. Students requesting disability-related housing accommodations must register with Student Disability Services and provide appropriate documentation.
2. Complete the Housing & Dining Accommodation Request Form. The form should identify the specific accommodation being requested and provide information supporting the disability-related need.
3. Submit supporting documentation. Documentation should explain the functional limitations that affect the student's use of university housing and support the requested accommodation.
4. SDS reviews the request. Student Disability Services reviews the request and documentation to determine whether an accommodation is supported.
5. Approved accommodations are communicated to University Student Housing. Housing uses the approved accommodation to identify an appropriate assignment or arrangement based on availability.

Students should submit requests as early as possible. Requests received after housing assignments have been made will still be reviewed, but implementation may depend on the availability of housing that meets the approved accommodation.

Dining Accommodations

Students whose disabilities affect their ability to use university dining services may request a dining accommodation through Student Disability Services.

Dining accommodations are considered individually and may be appropriate when a disability or medical condition creates dietary restrictions or other barriers to accessing university dining.

Students should provide documentation that explains the disability-related dietary need rather than only identifying a food preference or preferred eating pattern.

Students with food allergies, medically necessary dietary restrictions or other disability-related dining needs should work with SDS and Hospitality Services to determine whether existing dining options meet their needs or whether an accommodation is necessary.

Hospitality Services can also provide information about dining locations, ingredients and available dietary options.

Dining Accommodation Process
