Associate Professor and
Dr. Heuman earned her Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University (BGSU) with an emphasis on communication and culture. While at BGSU she also completed graduate certification in Ethnic Studies. Her M.A. is from Western Michigan University and her B.A. was earned from Spring Arbor University; each degree was earned in Communication Studies. She became a member of the TTU faculty in 2003 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2009.
Dr. Heuman is the author of a number of research articles and book chapters on Whiteness, cultural identity negotiation and performances of identity, Latino cultures and healthcare, and communication pedagogy.
She has presented her research via 40+ conference and university presentations, earned top paper awards at NCA, SSCA, and WSCA, secured funding and consulted on research grants aimed at better understanding Latino/a cultures and healthcare needs, chaired over sixteen theses and dissertations, served as committee member on over fifteen thesis and dissertation committees, and directed dozens of independent study courses in her role as a faculty member.
Dr. Heuman has also developed a public speaking curriculum (the Community Engagement Public Speaking Program) and works in partnership with TTU COMS students and Guadalupe Parkway Neighborhood Centers to assist underserved and underrepresented youth in developing their "civic and public voices" within the greater Lubbock community. She is currently examining social change and community transformation within South Texas colonias where she conducted ethnographic research last fall.
