Academic Skills

Paradigm shift from high school to college. Learning Styles, Note Taking, Reading Textbooks, and Test Taking.

10:30-11:30 a.m.

Electronic Database Tour of Library

A demonstration about all of Texas Tech University's electronic resources, including the library's online card catalogue, digital records of academic journals, and research databases. Searches of primary and secondary sources included, as well as a discussion about finding and using quality academic sources.

11:30-12:15 p.m.

Physical Tour of Library

During the electronic database tour, students will be able to research call numbers for their research project. A librarian will show them how to navigate the library stacks, search microfiche, and access government documents.

12:15-1:00 p.m.

Lunch

All of our meals will be eaten in the dormitory's dining hall.

1:15-1:45 p.m.

Academic Cohert Group Workshop

Academic cohort groups will discuss research assignments. Students will select topics and devise plans for research.

2:00-2:50 p.m.

Walking Campus Tour

A current Texas Tech undergraduate student will take students around campus. Students will learn about the history and traditions of Texas Tech University.

3:00-3:30 p.m.

Admissions Meeting

A representative from TTU admissions will meet with students to talk about how to apply to Texas Tech University. The representative will be able to answer specific questions from students.

3:30-4:00 p.m.

Housing Presentation

A current Texas Tech student will give a walking tour of the campus.

4:15-5:15 p.m.

Academic Lecture

Students will experience what sitting in a college classroom is like as one of Texas Tech University's best professors gives an academic lecture.

5:20-6:00 p.m.

Dinner

6:15-8:00 p.m.

Research Workshop

Academic cohort groups will work in the library. Mentors will be present to help workshop how to research and to writing an academic essay.

Financial Aid/Scholorship Meeting

A representative from the Texas Tech University Financial Aid office will meet with students to discuss ways in which to make their collegiate education affordable. Topics will include how to apply for financial aid, different types of financial aid, scholarships and grants, work-study opportunities, and college cost calculators.

Campus Scavenger Hunt

Campus

Students will find their own way around campus by visiting different campus entities to collect various items to bring back to the program director. (List of items to collect will be provided by the program director.) The group who brings back the most items from the list, with the best representations of each, will receive a prize.

3:45-4:05 p.m.

Debrief Campus Scavenger Hunt

During this time students will report on their scavenger hunt experiences.

4:15-4:45 p.m.

Ambassadors from the Honors College will talk with students about what the Honors College is, the benefits of joining the College, and how to apply.

4:05-5:15 p.m.

A representative from the CUR will talk about what they do to help student partner with faculty mentors in their research, as well as the support they offer students to present research at academic conferences.

5:20-6:00 p.m.

Students will visit Dr. Amy Heuman's Intercultural Communication course. Dr. Heuman is an Associate Professor of Communication Studies.

A special guest, Gerald Benavides, a senior from Corpus Christi, will visit to talk about life in Lubbock. Also during this time pod leaders will debrief the day, preview the next day, answer any questions students may have, and help direct student research projects.

During this time period students will share their progress on their research projects with their Academic Cohort group and offer collaborative strategies for advancing each other's ideas and research.

The Support Operations for Academic Retention offers many different services to support academic success at Texas Tech. Students will learn about different services offered, including The Learning Center, Supplemental Instruction, Academic Skills Advisement, etc.

Discovery! helps students realize their gifts, talents, and interests. Students will take the FOCUS assessment and be informed about different services offered by the Advising Center and options for their study and potential professional careers.

Career Center Services

Students' success does not end at graduation, but continues into their professional careers. The University Career Services Center offers services relating to career explorations, internships, job search, and job readiness.

Academic cohort mentors will meet one-on-one to discuss student progress during the week. Give students constructive feedback for academic growth.

Graduation Ceremony

Merket Alumni Center

Students will select a graduation speaker from their ranks to give remarks about the week. Students will be presented with certificate of program completion. A university representative will give remarks.
