Patrick Hughes

Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Associate Professor of Communication Studies
Patrick Hughes joined the Department of Communication Studies in August 2000 as an assistant professor. He received tenure and promotion to associate professor in 2006. Dr. Hughes teaches courses in communication research methods, interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, and communication theory. Dr. Hughes served as chair of the Department of Communication Studies from 2007 to 2009 and Associate Dean for Academic Programs in University College from 2009 to 2011. Dr. Hughes currently serves as Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. Dr. Hughes’s research concerns understanding communication problematics from a multi-methodological approach. Specifically, his research is oriented toward studying family contexts, intercultural contexts, and interpersonal contexts such as interaction between married partners and in health contexts such as interactions between between patients and providers. Dr. Hughes earned his Ph.D. from the University of Denver, his M.S. from Illinois State University, and his B.A. from Augustana College.
