Physics and Astronomy
Melanie Ungar has made major contributions and innovations in the advising programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. She has taken charge of advising all 185 majors in one-on-one meetings every semester. This has led to an increase in students remaining on-track for graduation. On her own initiative, she is in the process of creating a Handbook for incoming students to be used at Red Raider Orientation advising sessions. Melanie has also taken over the process of meeting with prospective students and their families, which is crucial for attracting high-quality students to our programs. In addition, she took on the task of taking photographs for all departmental events, which was beyond the call of duty for her position. Rather than just maintaining the status quo she has gone out of her way to create new procedures and materials which bolster our students' chances for success, and ensured that they receive the help that they need in order to succeed.
