Distinguished Staff Awards 2021: Scott Mitchell School of Veterinary MedicineScott Mitchell
Director of Facilities
School of Veterinary Medicine

The new School of Veterinary Medicine has had its challenges from historical, political and institutional rivalry, to planning, support, funding, development and now to its physical realization.  Scott Mitchell's position was broadly defined as "director of facilities" (and other duties as assigned). His job took him to explore every single detailed facet of building a facility from the ground up and learning about every detail that would or could occur in those building - for an entirely new program at Texas Tech, away from the main campus, under Texas Tech University but situated on a Texas Tech Health Sciences Center Campus. What sets Scott so far above anyone in a similar role is his contribution to the tag line of his employment contract - "and other duties as assigned". Scott displayed remarkable flexibility in the recruitment and hiring process of other staff and faculty, was often a part of the interview process, helped facilitate support to the deans, was instrumental in developing our core values, led the process for procurement, receiving and organization of all our equipment and supplies. He was initially the go-to-person for "how do I order a computer or set up my wifi" to "a breaker has been thrown, who do we call", to "who is in charge of HR for the school". The work Scott has done on other duties as assigned are most reflective in this matador award. He has truly gone above and beyond for this new program.
