Lecture Series and Workshops

Energy Law Lecture Series

Each year, the Energy Law Lecture Series features six prominent speakers who deliver policy-oriented presentations on topics of current interest. The lectures are approved for one hour of Texas CLE credit and are streamed live through the Texas Tech Law website.

During the 2015–2016 year, the series hosted:

  • Mark Mathis, filmmaker, speaker, author, consultant, including a screening of spOILed the night before at Alamo Draft House
  • Heather DeShon, Seismologist at Southern Methodist University
  • Alex Epstein, New York Times Best-Selling Author of The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels and Center for Industrial Progress President and Founder
  • Drew Darby, Chairman of the House Energy Resources Committee, Texas House of Representatives District 72
  • Lynn Lyon, President of EnergyConnects
  • Hunter Hunt, CEO of Hunt Consolidated Energy, LLC

The 2016-2017 series kicked off with a lecture by President and CEO of the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, Al Zapanta. The series will also feature, among others:

  • Kathleen Hartnett White, Distinguished Senior Fellow and Director, Armstrong Center for Energy and the Environment and author of Fueling Freedom
  • Ryan Sitton, Commissioner of the Railroad Commission of Texas
  • Dr. Bernard Weinstein – Associate Director of SMU's Maguire Energy Institute
  • Phelim McAleer – Producer/Director, including a screening of FrackNation the night before at Alamo Draft House
  • Tom Fitzsimmons – Commissioner of the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission

Nuts-and-Bolts Workshops

"Nuts-and-Bolts" workshops familiarize students with the practical applications of energy law. Six energy practitioners are recruited each year to share valuable tips with the students on topics including title examination, oil-and-gas litigation, acquisitions and divestitures, oil-and-gas lease negotiation, exploration-and-production issues, and surface-owner challenges.
