Graduate Certificate in Book History and Digital Humanities

The TTU graduate certificate in Book History and Digital Humanities, available both onsite and online, helps meet the clear need for training in digital humanities and history of the book, especially for graduate students in the humanities. In recent years, academic job postings increasingly request applicants with Book History or Digital Humanities experience. The TTU certificate will help students develop the skills and networking opportunities to be competitive in this challenging market.

Applying to the Certificate

All applicants must complete the Graduate School Application. External applicants are asked to provide the following:

• Transcripts of their most recent degree
• A personal statement describing their interests in book history and/or digital humanities
• A writing sample demonstrating the ability to research and write at the graduate level
• Two letters of recommendation that speak to the applicant's ability to work at the graduate level

Applicants already enrolled in a TTU graduate program should contact the Certificate Co-ordinator, Dr. Marta Kvande before filling out the application.

Certificate Requirements

Students enrolled in the Certificate in Book History and Digital Humanities take 15 credit hours (that is, five courses). Of those, 3 hours come from the BHDH core, and the remaining 12 hours (four courses) from electives, in consultation with the certificate co-ordinator.

All core courses and most of the elective courses are offered both onsite and online.

• ENGL 5340: Research Methods (only applicable when contains appropriate content)

• ENGL 5345: Letterpress Printing History and Practice (onsite only)
• ENGL 5347: Scholarly Editing in Digital Environments
• ENGL 5348: Topics in History of the Book
• ENGL 5349: Religion and the Material Text
• ENGL 5369: Discourse and Technology
• ENGL 5375: Document Design
• ENGL 5376: Online Publishing
• ENGL 5386: Written Discourse and Social Issues
• ENGL 5388: Usability Testing and Research

English courses not on this list and courses in other departments may be considered for credit in the certificate with the advance approval of the certificate director. To request such consideration, please contact the director, Dr. Marta Kvande.
