Graduate Scholarships
The following scholarship awards are available to graduate students in the Department of History. Students generally apply for these scholarships in the spring semester, and the awards are handed out at the departments annual banquet, which is held toward the end of the spring semester. If you have any questions about the scholarships, please contact the Director of Graduate Studies or the Graduate Program Coordinator.
Doris A. Blaisdell Graduate Scholarship
For deserving graduate students studying any field of history.
Doris A. Blaisdell Graduate Scholarship in Modern European History
For deserving graduate students studying modern European history.
Lawrence L. and Louise Graves Scholarship
For undergraduate or graduate history students in any field of study. The recipient
must have at least a 3.0 GPA and financial need may be considered. Please include
a statement explaining your interests/goals in history.
Robert A. Hayes Latin American History Scholarship
For undergraduate or graduate history students with an interest in Latin American
history. Selection is based on both academic achievement and financial need. Please
include a statement explaining your interests/goals in history and a brief statement
describing your interest in National Latin American History.
Oscar A. Kinchen Scholarship
For undergraduate or graduate history students, preferably with an interest in British
or Canadian history. Selection is based on academic achievement (at least a 3.0 GPA)
and financial need. Please include a statement explaining your interests/goals in
history.
S.S. McKay Memorial Scholarship
For deserving students writing theses or dissertations in Texas History. Based on
character, academic achievement, writing ability, quality of initial research, and
potential contribution of thesis. Please include a statement explaining your interests/goals
in history and your interest in the history of Texas.
W.B. and Mozelle Rushing History Scholarship
For a deserving undergraduate or graduate student in history. Selection is based on
academic achievement. Please include a statement explaining your interests/goals in
history.
David and Winifred Vigness Memorial Scholarship
For undergraduate or graduate students in American or Latin American history with
special consideration given to students in Mexican, Southwestern, or Texas history.
Selection is based on academic achievement—at least a 3.0 GPA. Please provide a statement
explaining your interests/goals in history and a brief statement describing your interest
in American, Latin American, Mexican, Southwestern or Texas History.
Ernest Wallace Memorial Scholarship
For deserving graduate students who are doing their Masters Thesis or are working
on their doctoral dissertation. Selection is based on academic achievement (3.5 GPA)
and financial need. Please include a statement explaining your interests/goals in
history.
Clint and Siva Chambers Scholarship
For graduate students who are conducting research on Southeast Asia or U.S. Western
History. Please include a statement explaining your interests/goals in history and
your interest in the history of Southeast Asia or U.S. Western History.
Rachel E. Hudson European Studies Scholarship
Overall GPA of 3.25 and a minimum GPA in history course study of 3.5 required for
applicants. The scholarship will go to an undergraduate or graduate student studying
European and/or Imperial History. The money should be used for tuition, books, or
cost incurred for research (copies, travel, fees, etc.). Please provide a statement
about your interests/goals in history and attach a statement about your interest in
European/Imperial History. This scholarship also requires that a faculty member familiar
with your areas of interest submit a letter in support of your application.
Alwyn Barr Dissertation Research and Writing Fellowship
For graduate students who have passed their comprehensive exams and are at the research
stage of their dissertation. Please include a statement explaining your interests/goals
in history.
Idris Traylor European Research Travel Award
For graduate students conducting thesis or dissertation research on Russia or Continental
Europe. The award is to be used to cover travel expenses associated with travel to
archives and research repositories in these locales. Please include a statement explaining
your interests/goals in history and upcoming research travel plans.
Drs. Otto Nelson and Allan Kuethe Graduate Scholarship
For graduate students who are at the research and writing stage of their thesis or
dissertation. Please include a statement explaining your interests/goals in history
and include any research travel plans for the upcoming summer/fall.
Paul H. and Ellen Carlson Fellowship
For a graduate student working on a thesis or dissertation topically related to the
American West, with special consideration given to a student utilizing resources through
the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library.
G.A. Dupras Scholarship in Military History
To support students studying the history of war and society in the College of Arts
and Sciences. For graduate students, preference will be given toward those actively
studying military history for their dissertation or thesis.
