Texas Tech’s online Master of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences Education is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in a family and consumer sciences content area or a related field or want to advance their career. The program is offered in partnership through the Interactive Distance Education Alliance (IDEA).

The program is built around the National Standards for Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences, ensuring graduates are prepared for the full scope of FCS instruction. 

Upon successful completion, you will be prepared to:

  • Apply evidence-based pedagogy in family and consumer sciences classrooms.
  • Design and implement curriculum aligned with Texas FCS content standards.
  • Support diverse learners, including students with special needs, through differentiated instruction.
  • Integrate technology and literacy strategies into FCS education.

Degree Requirements

The program consists of 38–41 semester credit hours delivered over three years, including coursework from at least two IDEA partner institutions. Courses are aligned with the National Standards for Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences.

Practicum & Internship

Students complete a 2-credit practicum and a 6–9 credit internship, both fulfilled in a Texas school district. The home/degree-granting institution coordinates student placement for both experiences.

Elective coursework may be added as needed or desired.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an FCS content area or related field
  • Admission to the Educator Preparation Program (EPP): minimum 2.75 GPA and 12 hours of FCS-related content
  • Students without these qualifications should consult an academic advisor before applying
  • Following admission, students must develop a state certification plan for Texas
  • All clinical/internship hours completed in a Texas school district
