NMHI Educational Opportunities
The Nutrition & Metabolic Health Initiative (NMHI) supports the educational and outreach missions at Texas Tech University in a variety of ways. See below for available opportunities:
NMHI Speaker Program
At the Nutrition & Metabolic Health Initiative (NMHI) clinic, our faculty includes some of the worlds leading experts in nutrition, health and wellness, obesity prevention and treatment, and chronic disease management. With a deep commitment to education and community engagement, we are proud to offer expert speakers for events, workshops, and presentations on a wide range of health-related topics tailored to your audiences needs.
Whether you're hosting a corporate wellness event, a school program, a healthcare seminar, or a community outreach initiative, NMHI faculty can provide evidence-based insights and engaging discussions on the latest in nutrition science and lifestyle medicine.
This speaker service is a community outreach initiative of NMHI and is provided free of charge within the greater Lubbock area. For events located beyond a 25-mile radius, a modest travel reimbursement fee may apply to cover associated expenses.
To request a speaker or learn more about available topics, please contact us. We look forward to supporting your organizations health and wellness goals.
NMHI On-Site Training Programs
For qualified students and advanced trainees—including graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, medical residents, and other health professions trainees—currently enrolled or employed within the Texas Tech University System, the Nutrition, Metabolic & Health Institute (NMHI) offers hands-on training opportunities in the areas of nutrition, health and wellness, and obesity-related care delivery.
This immersive, experiential training is designed to complement formal academic and clinical education by providing real-world exposure to multidisciplinary care models, evidence-based nutrition interventions, and patient-centered strategies for managing complex health conditions. Trainees work alongside experienced NMHI faculty and clinicians, gaining valuable insight into how nutrition science is applied in clinical, research, and community settings.
Our goal is to help prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to integrate nutrition and lifestyle medicine into their future practice—regardless of specialty.
To learn more about eligibility and current training opportunities, please contact our team or speak with your program coordinator.
Student Provider Experience
At NMHI, we are committed to bridging the gap between academic learning and clinical application. Through our Student Provider Experience program, we offer students the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a real-world clinical setting, where they gain firsthand experience in delivering patient-centered care.
Participants in the program actively contribute to the day-to-day operations of the clinic, enhancing their practical knowledge and clinical skillset through direct involvement in nutrition assessments, care planning, and multidisciplinary team collaboration. Students are trained in a range of essential clinical competencies, including body composition analysis, metabolic testing, anthropometric measurements, phlebotomy, and blood sample processing.
Beyond technical skills, the program places strong emphasis on developing clinical leadership and communication abilities. Advanced student providers have the opportunity to mentor and train incoming cohorts, fostering a collaborative, team-based learning environment. Equally important is the focus on patient interaction and rapport-building, helping students cultivate the empathy and interpersonal skills that are vital to effective healthcare delivery.
In addition, students are granted access to cutting-edge, real-time research being conducted within the clinic, allowing them to engage with the latest advancements in nutrition science and contribute to ongoing studies.
At NMHI, we believe that empowering students with both the clinical expertise and the human connection behind patient care not only prepares them for their future roles in healthcare—it helps shape them into thoughtful, compassionate, and impactful providers.
“I have found immense value in the learning opportunities NMHI offers. The ability to assist and help in the development of nutritional research, body composition, and metabolic testing as a student has been a life changing experience. After a few years, I have found myself transitioning from learning to demonstrating the skills I have acquired at NMHI. I can truly say my time here has added both professional and interpersonal value to my career.”

NMHI Events
As part of our mission to promote health and well-being throughout the region, Texas Tech Universitys Nutrition & Metabolic Health Initiative (TTU-NMHI) periodically hosts community outreach and engagement events designed to educate, empower, and inspire healthier living.
One of our signature initiatives, Nutrition & Weight Management Day, brings together healthcare professionals, educators, students, and community members for a day focused on the latest evidence-based strategies in nutrition, weight management, and chronic disease prevention. These events often feature interactive workshops, expert panels, cooking demonstrations, wellness screenings, and opportunities for personalized nutrition guidance.
Through events like these, NMHI fosters open dialogue about the challenges and opportunities in achieving better health—and helps individuals take practical steps toward lasting lifestyle changes.
Stay connected with us for upcoming dates and opportunities to attend or participate. Together, were building a healthier West Texas, one event at a time.
