Biography

Dr. Ioannis (Yanni) Karampelas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Texas Tech University, with a joint appointment at the Institute for Sustainability and Circular Economy (ISCE), a university-wide platform that connects TTU academic units, centers, and programs working to transform waste into valuable resources and advance the shift toward a circular economy. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the University at Buffalo in 2016, advised by Professor Edward P. Furlani. He also holds a Diploma (equivalent to a combined B.Sc./M.Sc.) in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece.

Prior to joining Texas Tech, Dr. Karampelas held industry positions as a CFD simulation engineer, where he developed and applied computational models for metal casting processes, microfluidic particle separation, and multiphase transport phenomena. Dr. Karampelas has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers on topics spanning microfluidics, phoretic particle transport, plasmonic photothermal energy conversion, biomechanical modeling, and metal-casting process simulation, in collaboration with researchers at the University at Buffalo, the University of Cantabria (Spain), the University of Hull (UK), the University of Washington, and the University of New Mexico, among others.

Research Interests

  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Heat/Mass Transfer and Multiphase Transport Phenomena
  • Microfluidics and Phoretic Transport Phenomena
  • AI-Accelerated Simulation and Surrogate Modeling for Multiphysics Systems
