Welfare, War and Waifs:
Three Child Rescue Movements in the 20th Century

In this lecture series, we will examine immediate crises which led to the sudden uprooting and disbursement of children by the thousands (even millions); the results – both good and bad, and the long-term impact on society's understanding of its responsibilities for children-at-risk.

  • The Orphan Train Movement in the United States
  • The Kindertransport (evacuating Jewish children from Nazi Germany to England)
  • The English evacuation of urban children to the countryside across WWII
