Gulag Town, Company Town: Forced Labor and Its Legacy in Vorkuta (Yale University Press, 2014) by Alan Barenberg reinterprets the relationship between the Soviet Gulag and Soviet society. Focusing on Vorkuta, an arctic outpost that was one of the most notorious sites of Soviet incarceration, it examines the nature and legacy of forced labor for Soviet communities and their residents from 1930-2010.

 

 

Author Bio: 

Alan Barenberg is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Texas Tech University. His book, Gulag Town, Company Town, was the winner of the 2015 Canadian Association of Slavists' Taylor and Francis Book Prize in Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies.
