Dr. Eric Bruning is an Associate Professor of Atmospheric Science in the Department
of Geosciences at Texas Tech University. He completed the sequence of B.S., M.S.,
and Ph.D. degrees in Meteorology from the University of Oklahoma in 2008, where he
also worked at NOAAs National Severe Storms Laboratory. He joined the faculty at
TTU in 2010 after a postdoctoral appointment at the University of Maryland in the
Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center / Cooperative Institute for Climate
and Satellites.
His interests include atmospheric electricity and lightning and their links to meteorological processes, cloud physics and dynamics, scientific computing in Python, the history and philosophy of science, and the intersection between the arts, design, and scientific visualization. He is a member of NOAAs GOES-R GLM Science Team, and is also supported by the National Science Foundation in studying the links between the distribution of lightning flash sizes and turbulence in thunderclouds. He is a past chair of the American Meteorological Society Committee on Atmospheric Electricity.
