Harold and Mary Dregne Graduate Endowed Scholarship

The Harold and Mary Dregne Graduate Program Endowment Fund was established by Dr. and Mrs. Harold Dregne in 1986. The scholarship is awarded to graduate students majoring in the Department of Plant and Soil Science with preference to Soil Science.

Harold Dregne came to Texas Tech University in 1969 to become Chairman of the Agronomy Department (now known as Plant and Soil Sciences) upon the retirement of Arthur W. Young. He also served as a member of the State Seed and Plant Board, Chairman of the Committee on Arid Lands for the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Consultant to the United Nations Desertification Conference and a member of the National Academy of Sciences Advisory Panel on the Sub-Saharan Drouth. He was also appointed the Director of Tech's International Center for Arid and Semi-Arid Land Studies. Harold passed away on May 21, 2002 at the age of 85.

Harold and Mary had two daughters, Nancy and Sharon. Nancy graduated from Texas Tech University in 1972 with a degree in secondary education. She is married to David Gonzales and they reside in Phoenix, AZ. Sharon passed away in 2012 at the age of 64. She was married to Alex Gerstenzang, who currently resided in West Hollywood, CA. They had two daughters, Jessica and Marissa.
