Master's Program Degree Tracks
All tracks in the MA program require 30 hours.
- The thesis track prepares students for in-depth studies in theory and research as well provides the foundation for the pursuit of a Ph.D. degree.
- The general professional track allows students to develop additional professional skills across a variety of media fields.
- The sports media track assists students in obtaining jobs in the fast-growing sports entertainment industry.
- All non-thesis students will complete a “final comprehensive evaluation” in the form of a capstone final project.
Thesis Track
Thesis track required classes are:
- 3 hours of MCOM 5364 Research Methods
- 3 hours of MCOM 5366 Seminar in Mass Communication Theory
- 3 hours of MCOM 5374 Data Analysis
- 9 to 15 hours of College Elective Course (can be in ADV, PR, EMJ or MCOM)
- 6 hours of MCOM 6000 Thesis
*Students may take up to 6 hours of graduate coursework outside of the college in place of up to 6 hours of College Elective Courses. Common courses outside of the College are:
- PSY 5329 Emotion
- PSY 5356 Seminar in Cognition
- POLS 5321 Seminar in Political Behavior
- Others at approval of graduate advisor

General Professional Track
General professional track required classes are:
- 3 hours of MCOM 5364 Research Methods
- 3 hours of MCOM 5366 Seminar in Mass Communication Theory
- 15 to 21 hours of College Elective Course (can be in ADV, PR, EMJ or MCOM)
- 3 hours of MCOM 6050 Final Project
*3 hours of MCOM 5370 Internship credit is possible under the College Elective Course category. This credit requires a minimum of 160 internship hours as well as weekly reports and a formal final evaluation. Internship can be combined with MCOM 6050 for a total of 6 hours of credit if internship has minimum of 300 hours and MCOM 6050 program and internship overlap.
**Students may take up to 6 hours of graduate coursework outside of the college in place of up to 6 hours of College Elective Courses with approval of graduate advisor.

Sports Media Track
Sports media required classes are:
- 3 hours of MCOM 5364 Research Methods
- 3 hours of MCOM 5366 Seminar in Mass Communication Theory
- 3 hours of MCOM 6330 Seminar in Media and Sport
- 12 to 18 hours of College Elective Course (can be in ADV, PR, EMJ or MCOM)
- 3 hours of MCOM 6050 Final Project

Concerning Final Project
- All non-thesis students will complete a “final comprehensive evaluation” in the form of a capstone final project. The course, which will be taken in the student’s final semester:
- will use the current COMC 6050 designation.
- will be listed under a graduate faculty member.
- will require students to complete an assignment in the form of a:
- practicum/internship
- portfolio
- directed readings
- applied research project
- will require students to orally present assignment to graduate faculty.
