If you are interested in taking the study abroad course in Berlin (focused on issues management within global communication contexts and focusing on alternative energy issues in particular), here is what you need to know:

  1. You have to apply for one of the 30 reserved spots in the course (15 undergraduate; 15 graduate).
  2. Don't actually sign up for the course on Raiderlink. We will put you in the course if you are selected.
  3. Interviews will be scheduled in mid-February, and selections will be made by March 1 from among the applicants.

In Lubbock

From mid-March on, we will have meetings once per week where we get together and talk about topics related to the class. Remember, you will be getting class credit for this trip so we have to have a certain number of state-required contact hours. The meetings should only be about an hour per week. We will typically meet in the early evening; we will find a time that is good for all involved. You may be assigned some readings and other activities to help prepare you for applied projects we will be conducting in Berlin.

In Berlin

Students will stay two to a room in Berlin. You can suggest your room pairings if you are selected.

We will be working with one to two PR agencies on projects related to alternative energy. There will be days that we put in long hours in the offices of the agencies. You will be expected to perform in an agency role doing actual PR work. You will work (and dress) as professionals representing Texas Tech.

There will also be days that we wrap up early and maybe even a few days where we don't go into the office. You may have some field work to do for the agencies on these days away from the office. But I promise, we will build in some down time for sightseeing and relaxing as well. Berlin is a vibrant and beautiful city, and there is a lot to do. You will have ample time to explore on your own or with the group.

Also, there is a weekend built into our trip. We will try to wrap up work by noon on that Friday, and you will not have to be back at work until the following Monday. On that weekend you are free to explore Berlin, Germany or surrounding countries on your own.

Arrive in Berlin: Saturday May 21 or Sunday May 22—program starts on Monday May 23

Depart Berlin: June 4 or June 5—last day of the program is June 3. You will have a hotel room from May 21 through the night of June 4.

You are not required to travel there or back with either of the instructors or in any group. If you want to go tour around beforehand or backpack Europe after we are done in Berlin, that is up to you.
