Welcome to the Department of Communication Studies
The Department of Communication Studies has a distinguished history as one of the original academic departments at Texas Tech University. Communication Studies prepares students for the meaningful and ethical public, professional, and personal practice of communication research and theory. The department offers both B.A. and M.A. degrees in Communication Studies. Undergraduate students may choose to specialize in Communication in Public Affairs, Interpersonal Communication, Corporate-Organizational Communication, as well as earn Secondary Teacher Certification in Communication Studies. Graduate students take a variety of coursework in communication and rhetorical research methods and in organizational communication, interpersonal communication, rhetoric, and conduct original thesis research. Graduate students may also apply for teaching assistantships.
Along with earning national and international reputations for teaching and research, Communication Studies professors are among the best teachers at Texas Tech with numerous teaching awards including the President's Excellence in Teaching Award and induction into the Texas Tech University Teaching Academy.
The Department is home to the 2008 National Championship Debate Team and the Mu Phi Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, the national honor society in Communication. The Communication Studies colloquium series provides an opportunity for students and the university community to engage the Communication Studies faculty and its guests in a dialogue about current theories and research in Rhetoric and Communication.
