Her research primarily focuses on the nexus between constitutional interpretation and federalism, which leads her to examine legal opinions, statutory laws, and political discourse. She teaches courses in rhetorical criticism and theory, political communication, church and state, social movements, and argumentation.

She is a prot�g� of Dr. Rebecca Rubin, who is considered one of the most prolific and notable researchers in interpersonal communication. Dr. Punyanunt-Carter's research interests include romantic relationships, computer-mediated communication, father-daughter communication, instructional communication, and religious communication. She is an active member of Mentor Tech and the Teaching Academy. She serves as a reviewer for many book publishers and journals.
