Miller Bonner's career followed a varied and diverse path, but it never strayed far from one constant: good writing.
Prior to his death, March 15, 2003, his position as general manager and national director of technology for Edelman/GTT was merely the latest writing position, including sports writing, political reporting and corporate communications. He joined the firm when Edelman purchased his Austin-based GTT Communications, a public relations company for high-tech clients.
Miller incorporated GTT in 1988 upon his return to Texas after management stints with IBM. His contributions included speechwriting, product position and publicity, public affairs, as well as environmental and crisis documents.
Previously, he directed communications for SEMATECH, an American model of industry-government collaboration in semiconductor manufacturing research. He handled overall communications, and governmental relations strategy and implementation for the high-tech consortium.
His career began in sports and column writing for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal and the San Antonio Express-News. He then joined the Associated Press as correspondent in the Rio Grande Valley before his promotion to the AP's Washington , D.C. , bureau.
Miller next served as communications manager for an IBM joint-venture project in laser optical videodisc technology on the West Coast. He later returned to Washington as press secretary to Kent Hance, a member of the U.S. House at the time.
He rejoined IBM in 1982 in New York , becoming communications manager for its Information Products Division. After graduation from IBM's International Management School in Belgium , Miller returned to Washington as a corporate staff member. He and his staff handled taxation, environmental and government procurement issues.
Miller and Karen, his wife, raised two daughters, Stephanie and Valerie. Miller's activities included membership in the National Press Club and the Headliner's Club in Austin . His lectures at UT-Austin and Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern were among his prouder moments.
