Writing the 30 second narrative

Students will learn how to fit an entire story into a 30-second or 15-second commercial. We will cover what makes a good story; how to write those stories; converting stories to story-boards; and basic television commercial production.

According to a recent report by Korn/Ferry, the ability to understand and use social media is one of the most sought-after skills for new employees. "Social media and public relations" is a course that is designed to acquaint students with a wide range of social media tools and to study how these tools can be used by businesses, government and nonprofit organizations. Emphasis will also be placed on understanding the strategic advantages social media offers when compared to other mass media channels.

Pete Brewton, a veteran investigative reporter and journalism faculty adviser to The Daily Toreador, will lead students through the labyrinth and mystery of journalism and politics as seen through the eyes of Hollywood. The class will watch six classic movies that show journalists at work in the realm of politics. Class discussion will center on how Hollywood views the practice of journalism viz-a-viz the politics of the day, and how this intricate interplay of different interests has evolved.

Learn about the exciting, challenging and fast-paced world of sports public relations from a seasoned professional. Mr. Cook is the managing director of communications & marketing at Texas Tech University. Previously, he worked for 11 years in the Texas Tech athletics department including nine years as an assistant athletic director. During that time he oversaw the media relations efforts for 17 sports programs, working closely with football and golf.

Take a look behind the scenes to see how sports goes from the field to the screen, and all the steps in between. Sports programming is on air, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We'll examine the processes and people responsible for packaging the wide world of sports for your viewing pleasure.



EMC 6315-002 - Fandom - Understanding Media Production and Consumption in the Digital Age

This course will examine the history and theoretical consideration of fandom and interrogate the status of the production/consumption binary in the era of networked, digital communication. Readings will focus on critical and cultural approaches to fandom and will examine case studies relating to music festivals, comic cons, film exhibition, fan fiction, "vidding," professional sports, tourism, and other forms of regular, emotional involvement. Students will gain insight into the changing nature of the relationship between media institutions, talent, and audiences in the context of Web 2.0 and will be able to apply this knowledge to both academic and professional practice.

Students will learn how to prepare for and respond to corporate, nonprofit, and government sector crises from a public relations perspective. Through case studies and in-class activities the course emphasizes the practical application of crisis communication theories, strategies, and tactics when developing and implementing crisis communication plans.

The purpose of this course is to provide students with a broad background to the processes of political communication from a strategic communication perspective and to explore the crucial relationships between mass communication, public relations and politics. An important goal will be to explore ways to allow media and strategic communication messages to contribute to a healthy and ethical political life rather than detract from it. We will examine both the conceptual and practical implications of strategic political communication and public relations in democratic governance.
