Mass Comm study abroad program

The College of Mass Communications hopes to offer a study abroad class in Monterrey, Mexico, during summer 2008. Students wishing to study abroad must attend three orientation workshops during the Spring 2008 semester. These workshops will be held in coordination with the faculty leader and the TTU Office of International Affairs.

Program Description:  Texas Tech University’s College of Mass Communications offers the opportunity for students to live in Monterrey, Mexico, learning about Spanish language and culture while earning mass communications elective hours.  The courses will be taught in English at the Monterrey Tec campus building in Mexico as well as by field trips to relevant sites.

Location:  The program is based in Monterrey, the third largest city in Mexico, a multicultural site where culture, adventure, entertainment, and business meet to give the visitor a great number of unique experiences.  The city boasts many fine arts venues as well as historical places to visit.  It provides easy access to northern Mexico’s stunning northern mountains and tourist destinations.

Eligibility:  The program is open to undergraduates from Texas Tech University as well as any other accredited U.S. institution of higher education.  Ideally, junior and senior students will have completed high school Spanish as well as their first year of college Spanish in order to enjoy off-campus adventures.

Courses and Credit:  ADV 4312, 3 credit hours of mass communications electives.

Lodging:  All students will be housed in international student dormitories on the Monterrey Tec campus.  Students will have the opportunity to socialize with European and South American students.

Estimated cost:  Costs run about $1,000 per hour of credit.  A detailed budget may be obtained by contacting Dr. Marijane Wernsman at the e-mail above.

Scholarships:   Students wishing to apply for summer school scholarships should contact the Office of International Affairs on campus.  Scholarships usually run from $300 to $1,200 for a summer session.  The Honors College also offers international travel scholarships.  Some financial aid may also apply to summer programs.  Contact the TTU Financial Aid office.

Applications/Payments:  As soon as sufficient interest is shown in the courses, applications will be available.  All paperwork must be submitted to the Office of International Affairs.  Pre-payment in installments and attendance at meetings will be required during the spring semester.
