What is your current role or what industry do you work in?

I am an associate veterinarian at a mixed animal veterinary practice. We practice approximately 80% small animal and 20% large animal. We are a fully functioning hospital that provides all types of care, from general wellness to internal medicine and surgery.

Why did you choose the Davis College/department?

With the goal of pursuing a career in veterinary medicine and aspirations of being on the judging teams, I knew the Davis College was the perfect fit for me. From the second I stepped foot into the animal science department during my first visit, I was warmly welcomed and felt confident I would be set up for success. The Davis College is comprised of hard-working individuals that share a passion for the agriculture industry and provide a strong community to guide you through college and into your career.

What impact does your work have and who benefits from it?

Being a veterinarian allows you to impact not only the people around you, but the animals and livestock, as well. Whether it be someone’s pet companion or production livestock, animals hold a lot of value to their owner in many ways. Ensuring that the animal’s quality of life is excellent from their first day to their last day and being able to help all of God’s creations through their highs and lows is a privilege I cherish dearly.

How did your department help with the skills you use in your career today?

The animal science department within the Davis College equipped me with the proper knowledge, skills, and network to best prepare my path to becoming a veterinarian. The classes and labs provide you with both relevant education and hands-on skills. Aside from classes, competing on the meat judging team and livestock judging team helped advance my critical thinking, decision-making, and communication skills. The judging teams also help you to expand your network of friends and mentors across the country, which can open new doors for education and career opportunities.

What advice would you give to students currently in the department?

My best piece of advice to students within the department is to get involved and create a strong network! You never know which activity, organization, or person could open a door that changes your life for the better. There are truly endless opportunities in the agriculture industry, and the Davis College provides you with the right tools and connections to be successful.
